Jack Wilshere was involved in a post-match melee with Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel after Luton's 2-1 win on Tuesday night.
Former Arsenal midfielder Wilshere walked past Stendel and shook his hand before he turned and pushed him, sparking an all-in scuffle on the pitch.
It is unclear what prompted the outburst but Wilshere played down the incident after the match.
"They want to win, we want to win. I've massive respect for them," Wilshere told BBC Sport.
"I know they haven't got the result but I can see what they're trying to do and they're a tough team to play against, they've got some good players.
"We got the win at the end and it gets a little bit heated but you shake hands at the end and everyone moves on.
"Sometimes as well you see how together we are and... we're respectful but sometimes as well it shows we are together. You want to be respectful but you also want to show togetherness."
The incident prompted memories of a similar incident between Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel when they were in charge at Tottenham and Chelsea, respectively, in 2022.
Luton are 13th in League One while Barnsley are 22nd.
