Manchester United slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League following Leny Yoro's red card, as pressure mounts on Michael Carrick.

The Spanish side scored inside the opening minute through Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman added a second at the Wanda Metropolitano five minutes after Yoro's sending off for taking out Jonathan David when through on goal.

United were held to a last-gasp 1-1 draw at home to winless Tottenham on Saturday afternoon as domestic football returned following the international break.

That saw them begin October as they ended September, having scored late themselves against another winless side in Fulham.

Defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup, as well as a loss against 10-man Manchester City at home in the Premier League, have heaped the pressure on Carrick.

In the Champions League though, United eased to a 4-0 win over Sabah at Old Trafford and they sit seventh in the league phase table.

Atlético find themselves in virtually the exact opposite situation, sitting second in the LaLiga table and winning each of their last four matches.

That included victory over rivals Real Madrid before the international break.

In the Champions League though, they were in 26th place, after suffering a 2-1 loss against Liverpool at Anfield, but now sit in 13th, after they were able to take their league form onto the European stage and dismantle a poor United side.
