Dawson: Anfield win could mean nothing if Man City are punished (1:47)

Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 amid a fiery backdrop at Anfield to stay top of the Premier League table.

In the first game for the visitors since confirmation they were found guilty of 114 charges relating to the league's financial rules last month, there was hostility and ridicule abound from home supporters as the news hung over kick-off.

Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark, which opened the gate for City to score in quick succession through Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki to take the win.

Here's how it happened.

Before Sunday's fixture, City head coach Enzo Maresca said the club's silverware won during the period relating to the charges was not tainted by the verdicts.

"The last time I was here was the Treble season and I know the effort from the players, the club, the manager. I know the effort that the club put to achieve that kind of target so I don't have any doubt about that," he said.

Maresca's men have won all five of their opening league fixtures and sit top of the table, while Liverpool are sixth, having recorded two wins and three draws under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool, meanwhile, recorded a 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth in their most recent outing, extending their unbeaten start to the campaign. However, three draws have left the Reds six points behind Sunday's opponents, and they are still searching for their first home league victory under Iraola.

City enjoyed the better of this fixture last season, winning both Premier League meetings, including a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory at Anfield in February. They also defeated Liverpool 4-0 in April's FA Cup quarterfinal, with Erling Haaland scoring a hat trick.
