Philadelphia Union and United States men's national team midfielder Cavan Sullivan became the youngest player in MLS history to be named Player of the Month on Wednesday when he was awarded the honors for September.
At 16, Cavan Sullivan became the youngest player to start a game for the United States since Freddy Adu in 2006 when he was picked in Mauricio Pochettino's XI for Saturday's 4-1 friendly win vs. Peru.
He was one of 11 players -- including seven other teenagers -- to make their first appearances for the U.S. in that game against Peru.
Sullivan, who turned 17 on Sept. 28, came on as a substitute on Tuesday in the USMNT's 4-2 friendly win over Chile.
Sullivan has seven goals and 12 assists in 26 games for the Union, who have surged up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference in recent weeks. He has played 1,675 league minutes in MLS.
His 19 goal contributions are tied with Alphonso Davies (2018) for the second-most by a teenager in an MLS season, trailing only Diego Fagundez (20 in 2013).
Since returning from the World Cup break, the Union have recorded 32 points during a 12-game unbeaten streak, which is tied for the most points by a club in a 12-game span in MLS history. Sullivan has started all 11 of those games, logging a goal contribution in eight of them.
Sullivan and the Union will return after the FIFA international break on Oc. 10 to host Real Salt Lake at Subaru Park (7:30 p.m. ET).
