Iran drew Egypt in a dramatic match that ended with VAR ruling out a Shojae Khalilzadeh goal at the very end and ended 1-1. Egypt qualified second in the group thanks to that result while now Iran have an agonising wait ahead of them, needing atleast one of three results (between Algeria, Croatia and Congo DR) to go their way.
In the other match of a very tight Group G, Belgium smashed New Zealand 5-1 to go top of the group on goal difference over Egypt.
The game started in an end-to-end manner. Mahmoud Saber scored the opener after a meek shot dribbled through the usually unflappable Alireza Beiranvand in the 5th minute. Iran roared back to win a penalty in the 10th minute, but talisman Mehdi Taremi saw his shot saved by Egypt keeper Mostafa Shobeir. In the 14th minute, though, Ramin Rezaeien scored from a tight angle to draw level.
That was it for the goals on the day, but hardly it for the drama. Towards the end, Taremi hit the crossbar with a header in the six-yard box off a corner, as did Saied Ezotalahi, but the main talking point will be Khalilzadeh's disallowed goal. He hung around at the far post and tapped in a loose ball after Shobeir came and missed the cross in; but he was millimetres offside with the goalkeeper ahead of the play and just one defender in between him and goal.
