América v Tigres
Tigres beat America in shootout in Leagues Cup
Tigres beat Club America in a shootout to advance to the Leagues Cup final after the match finished in a 2-2 draw in regulation time in Houston on Tuesday.
Tigres got in front inside of 15 minutes when Paul Aguilar redirected Jurgen Damm's whipped-in cross into his own net to give "Tuca" Ferretti's team a 1-0 lead.
However, America hit back from the penalty spot through Andres Ibarguen after VAR determined that Carlos Salcedo had fouled Roger Martinez as the teams went into half-time tied 1-1.
Searching for the go-ahead goal, Ferretti brought on French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac just after the hour mark, but it was Club America that looked like winning when Ibarguen cut inside to his right and blasted a shot that Nahuel Guzman deflected up and into his own goal.
Martinez was sent off in second-half stoppage time for allegedly punching Guido Pizarro and Tigres took advantage on the last play of regulation time when Bruno Valdez lept for a header from a long throw in and it skipped off his head and into America's goal to send the game to penalty kicks.
Guzman made a crucial save in the shootout against Leonel Lopez and Salcedo hit the winning penalty to send Tigres to the final on Sept. 18.
