The Portland Timbers defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 on Friday night to advance to become the first team to advance to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.
Sebastian Blanco scored the only goal on the half-hour, finding the net after receiving a backheeled pass from Fanendo Adi.
The Galaxy were without many of their top players, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Dos Santos brothers, with the game played during the World Cup -- and they suffered further setbacks as Ola Kamara and Emmanuel Boateng left the game injured in the second half.
In the next round, Portland will travel to face the winner of LAFC and the USL's Sacramento Republic, who play next Wednesday.
