FRANKFURT, Germany -- Xabi Alonso scored a spectacular goal for Bayern Munich to beat Darmstadt 1-0 and earn a place in the DFB Pokal quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Alonso received the ball from around 35 yards out and then sent home an unstoppable right-footed shot before half-time.
Bayern laboured to overcome a well-organised Darmstadt, and struggled to create many chances against the Bundesliga newcomers.
Elsewhere, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez continued his fine scoring form as Bayer Leverkusen won 3-1 win at fourth-tier Unterhaching.
