Holders Leicester Tigers kept their Anglo-Welsh Cup hopes alive with a 24-12 victory over Cardiff Blues in a scrappy game at Welford Road.

Leicester's second win in three games in Pool Four was only their second in 10 games in all competitions and they scored three tries through Will Evans, Jordan Olowofela and Luke Hamilton, with Joe Ford kicking nine points.

Jack Roberts and Lewis Jones scored for Cardiff and yellow cards were shown to Blues prop Corey Domachowski and Leicester lock Joe Maksymiw.

Argentina prop Facundo Gigena made his debut for Leicester, who were bidding to end a disastrous run of eight defeats in nine matches in all competitions.

Cardiff, bottom of Pool One with no points, included two former Tigers, winger and captain Blaine Scully and centre Jack Roberts.

Leicester led 17-0 after a scrappy first half thanks to tries from flanker Evans and 19-year-old Olowofela, who made his second appearance for the club while Gareth Owen was having a head injury assessment, with fly-half Ford converting both and kicking a penalty.

Ford gave Leicester the lead in the third minute with an easy penalty and the Tigers then took advantage of Cardiff being down to 14 men after prop Domachowski was sin-binned in the 22nd minute after Cardiff had committed one offence too many.

While he was off the field, Leicester scored both their tries. In the 24th minute Evans darted over from a ruck on the line after a line-out and drive, and eight minutes later Olowofela's quick feet earned him his first try for Leicester after another line-out.

Cardiff wasted a golden opportunity after a cracking 50-metre move from a quickly taken tap penalty in the 52nd minute but it led to a siege of the Tigers line and Roberts scored against his former club in the 54th minute after a scrum. Fly-half Steven Shingler converted.

And the visitors were right back in the game seven minutes later when scrum half Lewis Jones darted over after taking a quick tap penalty near the line, with the Leicester defence half asleep. Shingler missed the conversion.

Cardiff's joy was shortlived because flanker Hamilton scored from a drive by the Tigers forwards in the 65th minute, Ford's conversion making it 24-12.

Tigers lock Maksymiw was sin-binned in the 70th minute but Leicester survived a late Cardiff onslaught.
