NRL Midweek Mail semifinals: Katoa opens up on possible Sharks curtain call

The NRL rarely stands still.

Between training sessions, media appearances, and behind-the-scenes conversations, new storylines often begin to emerge before the weekend arrives.

Throughout the week, ESPN will be gathering notes, insights, and updates from around the competition heading into the NRL's semifinal week.

Katoa reveals Cowboys appeal

Sione Katoa has revealed North Queensland's attacking style was a major attraction behind his move to the Cowboys in 2027.

After helping eliminate his future club from the finals, Katoa told ESPN he "loves the style of footy" they play, describing it as "free footy" and similar to Cronulla's attack.

He also admitted the reality that every game could be his last for Cronulla is beginning to sink in.

"Tonight might have been the last week, maybe the last game," he told ESPN after scoring a double against North Queensland.

"I'm very happy right now that I get another week with my brothers and play again."

Cleary racing clock for preliminary final

Nathan Cleary is in doubt for Penrith's preliminary final after scans revealed an stress-related bone issue in his foot.

The Panthers will assess and monitor their star halfback over the next fortnight, with their week off providing valuable recovery time.

Cleary has, however, been cleared of any suspension concern after receiving only a Grade 1 Dangerous Contact charge for his incident with Hugo Savala.
