The NRL rarely stands still.
Between NRL training sessions, media appearances, and behind-the-scenes conversations, new storylines often begin to emerge before the weekend arrives.
Throughout the week, ESPN will be gathering notes, insights, and updates from around the competition heading into Round 19 of the NRL.
Bulldogs Boost
The Canterbury Bulldogs are set for two major boosts in their clash against the Raiders on Saturday, with Stephen Crichton expected to back up after Origin III and Jacob Preston preparing for his return from injury.
"[Preston] is good and ready to go," Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo revealed.
"[Crichton] has pulled through Origin pretty well, and at the moment we're expecting him to line up for us."
Roosters uninterested in Tigers star
Following reports that Jarome Luai has been given permission to look elsewhere for 2027 by the Tigers, Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has ruled his side out of the race for his signature.
"[Jarome Luai is] not on our radar," Robinson shared.
Luai is currently contracted to the Tigers until the end of next season, and will link up with the PNG Chiefs in 2028.
Reports indicate the Parramatta Eels are the frontrunner for his signature at this stage.
Bondi backups
Trent Robinson expects the Roosters' Origin stars named in the starting side to back up after Wednesday night's Game III clash.
"Obviously Teddy won't be playing [after his head knock]," Robinson started.
"But the rest that I've selected there will be playing."
He went on to say that the Origin players named in the reserves, Sam Walker and Reece Robson, likely won't play.
"I've been pretty clear about naming the guys in the order that I want to play them," he said.
"So there'll be some of those guys that won't play."
Leota weighs up options
Moses Leota has now been briefed on the level of interest in his services ahead of the opening of the 2028 market, ESPN understands.
Sources indicated the Penrith representative prop has been presented with the current landscape after multiple clubs expressed interest, with Leota continuing to assess his options before the market formally opens on November 1.
Wighton's cast here to stay
Jack Wighton has revealed he'll wear a protective cast for the remainder of his career after undergoing surgery on his broken arm.
The Rabbitohs veteran returned against Penrith last week and said the plate inserted into his arm means the protection is now permanent.
"I think it stays with me now," Wighton said.
"Because I've got a plate in my arm, the cast is for the rest of my career."
Despite taking a few knocks on the arm against the Panthers, Wighton said post-match scans showed everything remained intact.
"I had a scan yesterday and nothing's changed," he said.
Wighton also touched on Cody Walker's brain snap in Round 18, saying he was quick to accept responsibility following his incident against Penrith.
"He owned up to it," Wighton said. "He knows it's unacceptable what happened. The only thing to do now is move forward."
Foxx opens on young stars
Parramatta Eels livewire Josh Addo-Carr says that the club's young guns are getting more and more comfortable under the bright lights of the NRL, with multiple players thrown into first grade due to injury in 2026.
"Confidence," he responded when asked what he's seen in his younger teammates in recent weeks.
"I think confidence is a massive part of a rugby league player. These boys are shining so far, and we need them to stay consistent."
He went on to say he's not thinking too much about a finals push at this stage, admitting that he's learned to focus on the present despite inching closer to the backend of the season.
Preston closing in return
The Bulldogs are hopeful Jacob Preston will return against Canberra this weekend after missing the past month through injury.
Tuala said the back-rower would provide a major boost if cleared to play.
"He'll be big for us... it's good to see him back."
Hayes, who hasn't played alongside Preston for some time, admitted he'd be excited to have him back in the side.
"It'd be pretty cool to have him back this week."
Origin next for Galvin?
Enari Tuala believes Lachlan Galvin's first taste of the NSW setup is only the beginning, backing the young playmaker to become an Origin player.
"He'll be an Origin player one day, for sure," Tuala said.
Meanwhile, teammate Harry Hayes said he reached out to congratulate Galvin after learning of his Blues camp selection.
"I messaged him when I saw it," he shared.
"It's really cool after what he's been through over the last couple of years."
"To be around Cleary [and] Moses... I definitely want to pick his brains."
Kiraz on track
Enari Tuala says Jacob Kiraz remains confident he'll be right to face the Raiders despite managing a few niggles at training.
"He's been in and out of training, but he's confident that he'll be right for the weekend and get the job done," Tuala said.
