The Nashville Predators traded forward Matthew Wood to the Seattle Kraken for forward Shane Wright on Sunday.
It's a one-for-one swap of a pair of young players seeking fresh starts after each was initially seen as part of his former franchise's future.
The trade also comes as both teams came into the day fighting for a playoff spot with Thanksgiving in the U.S. drawing closer. The Kraken (8-5-1) are third in the Pacific Division in the early going, while the Predators (5-4-5) are the first team behind the St. Louis Blues for the second Western Conference wild-card spot.
Wright, 22, was the fourth pick in 2022 by the Kraken as they selected the two-way center with the intent that he and Matthew Beniers could give them a pair of top-six anchors down the middle for years to come. Beniers was the second pick in 2021 and would go on to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 2023, whereas Wright came into his draft year as a potential candidate to be the No. 1 selection, a distinction that would belong to Juraj Slafkovsky when he went to the Montreal Canadiens.
Wright's development was stop-start until his third season in 2024-25 saw him have 19 goals and 44 points in 77 games. A year later, his production dipped with 12 goals and 27 points. Wright came into Sunday with four points in 14 games this season.
Still, he remained the subject of trade speculation for more than a year until he was moved for Wood.
Wood, who went 15th in 2023, debuted late in the 2024-25 season after leaving school before playing his first full campaign in 2025-26. He emerged as one of the more productive rookies in the league with 17 goals and 30 points in 71 games last season, only to have his second full campaign get off to a challenging start. Wood has scored one goal and three points in 14 games.
