Clay Matthews cleared for 'trial return'

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If all goes well, Clay Matthews will only miss one week of training camp.

A week after he missed his first of five practices because of a sore knee, the Green Bay Packers linebacker was given the OK on Monday to try to practice.

"Clay Matthews is on a trial-and-error, trial return," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said before Monday's practice.

Matthews took part in most of the drills during the 97-minute practice. He said his knee held up fine and "felt pretty good."

However, he would not say whether he would play in Thursday's preseason opener at New England.

"You know what, any opportunity to be out there, especially in regards to preseason games, I think is very important," Matthews said. "But there's always other factors that go along with that."

Matthews has insisted all along that his knee injury was "nothing to worry about," but perhaps the missed practice time was because he's going through his first training camp as both an inside and outside linebacker. He added inside linebacker duties to his job description midway through last season.

Matthews missed four regular training camp practices last week plus Saturday's Family Night practice in Lambeau Field.

The Packers open the preseason on Thursday at New England.
