PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed pitcher Archie Bradley on the 15-day disabled list with a sinus fracture in the right side of his face Wednesday, the result of his being struck by a batted ball in the second inning of Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies.
Bradley was taken to a Phoenix hospital for further tests after leaving the game in the second inning. He was able to stand up and walk off the mound; he later rejoined his teammates for the last moments of their 12-5 win over the Rockies.
The tests initially revealed sinus damage, and Bradley also had swelling above his jaw. Manager Chip Hale said after the game that a disabled list designation was likely, and on Wednesday the club called up reliever Enrique Burgos from Double-A Mobile to take Bradley's place on the roster.
"I'm lucky it's not worse than it is," Bradley said. "Lucky, blessed and fortunate."
Bradley feels he will be back as soon as the 15 days are up, and he's looking forward to getting back to work.
"Dating back to football, there's many times when I got hit pretty hard stepping into a throw and I got back up and made the same throw on the next play," Bradley said. "Granted, this is a little bit different situation. I can't see it affecting me, but I won't know until I get out there."
Bradley said Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who hit the ball, texted Bradley to tell him he was praying for him.
"I just thought it was a really classy move for him to reach out to me,'' Bradley said.
Bradley also heard from Los Angeles Angels slugger Mike Trout and former NFL linebacker Brian Bosworth, both offering encouragement.
