UNC Asheville advances with 80-69 win over High Point
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Ahmad Thomas and Dylan Smith each scored 18 points and No. 4 seed UNC Asheville upset No. 1 seed High Point 80-69 in the semifinals of the Big South Conference tournament on Saturday.
Dwayne Sutton finished with 13 points and 10 boards and Sam Hughes added 11 points for UNC Asheville (21-11).
The Bulldogs led 39-26 at the break and pushed their advantage back to double figures (61-49) after back-to-back layups by Thomas and Sutton with 8:09 to go.
High Point (21-10) rallied from there, going on a 16-8 scoring spurt to cut it to 69-65 on a Miles Bowman Jr. layup with 2:17 remaining. But Smith made four in a row at the free throw line for a 73-65 lead and the Panthers never recovered.
Bowman Jr. led High Point with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
UNC Asheville plays Winthrop in the championship game on Sunday.
