ARLINGTON, Texas -- Shawn Long scored a career-high 31 points as Louisiana-Lafayette held on for a 92-89 win over Texas-Arlington on Thursday night.
Louisiana-Lafayette (14-9, 5-5 Sun Belt Conference) went on a 29-3 run in the first half -- at one point scoring 19 straight -- to build a 40-15 lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns led by as many as 20 in the second half and were up 85-70 with less than 3 minutes to play but Texas-Arlington (9-13, 4-6) made a furious comeback, going on a 19-6 run to cut its deficit to 91-89 with 1.8 seconds left
Louisiana-Lafayette hit a free throw with 1.1 seconds remaining and missed the second, but the ball went out of bounds as time expired.
Elfrid Payton added 22 points and Hayward Register had 17 as Louisiana-Lafayette shot 51.6 percent from the field and 9 of 21 from 3-point range.
Lonnie McClanahan had 31 points for Texas-Arlington.
