Iorio leads American to 69-58 upset over Boston U.
BOSTON -- Sam Iorio scored a career-best 26 points to lead American University in a 69-58 upset over Boston University on Wednesday night.
Iorio was 9 of 20 from the floor, 5 of 10 from beyond the arc and had seven rebounds, four assists and six steals. Sa'eed Nelson added 18 points, five assists and four steals. Marvin Bragg chipped in nine points with six rebounds.
Iorio and Nelson led a 13-0 surge in the final six minutes of the first half to move the Eagles (5-13, 2-5 Patriot league) from an eight-point deficit to a 29-24 lead at intermission.
Iorio, Nelson and Bragg combined for three back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half to push it to 50-41 with 8:39 left. Boston closed to 57-51 with 2:38 to play but a pair of Iorio 3-pointers in the stretch helped preserve the Eagles' advantage.
Cedric Hankerson scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Terriers (9-9, 5-2) who had won the previous three games but fell behind Bucknell in the Patriot League standings.
