UMBC rallies late to beat Maine 72-67
BANGOR, Maine -- Jairus Lyles scored 16 points with seven rebounds and UMBC rallied late to beat Maine 72-67 on Wednesday night.
Joe Sherburne added 15 points for the Retrievers (11-7, 2-1 America East). K.J. Maura had 12 points and Daniel Akin had 11 points and seven rebounds. Arkel Lamar led the team with nine rebounds.
Lyles sank a jumper early in the second half to give UMBC its biggest lead, 41-30, with 18:26 to play. Maine replied with a 15-3 run and took a 45-44 lead with 13:57 left.
The Retrievers continued to struggle midway, falling behind by six before a Sherburne 3-pointer and an Akin layup helped put them back on top 59-57 with 5:51 remaining. Maura followed a pair of free throws with a 3-pointer to make it 66-61 and UMBC led the rest of the way.
Aaron Calixte scored 24 points to lead the Black Bears (4-14, 1-2) who have lost six of the last seven.
