Eaves, Mortimer lead SC State past Delaware State 74-64
ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Eric Eaves scored 19 points, Greg Mortimer scored 17 on 8-for-9 shooting and South Carolina State pulled away late to beat Delaware State 74-64 on Saturday night.
Dana Raysor had a pair of free throws to bring the Hornets to within 59-56 with 2:59 left, but Eaves made a layup, and after Raysor turned it over, Mortimer had a 3-point play to push the lead to eight.
Devon Morgan converted a 3-point play on a layup with 92 seconds left to reduce the deficit to four, but the Hornets couldn't get closer. The Bulldogs shot 58 percent (14 for 24) in the second half.
Eaves finished 8 for 12 from the floor, James Richardson had 12 points and Edward Stephens had 10 for South Carolina State (5-12, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic).
Artem Tavakalyn scored 12 points, Morgan 11, and DeAndre Haywood had 10 for Delaware State (5-15, 2-3). The Hornets have dropped three straight and have lost seven of their last nine.
