Mayo, Gist lead Eastern Kentucky over IUPUI 97-87
RICHMOND, Ky. -- Nick Mayo scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Asante Gist had 21 points, and Eastern Kentucky scored 45 points from the free-throw line in a 97-87 season-opening win over IUPUI on Friday night.
Mayo, last year's Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, was 12 of 12 from the line, while Gist made 16 of his 22 attempts to go with seven boards and five assists.
Eastern Kentucky led by as many as 24 in the second half, but a layup from Darrell Combs got IUPUI within 86-76 with 2:12 remaining.
The Colonels made 11 free throws in the final 1:34 and finished 45 of 56 from the stripe.
IUPUI had two players foul out and five with four fouls. Combs led all scorers with 28 points for the Jaguars.
The game featured 65 fouls and 83 free-throw attempts between both teams.
