Cleveland State holds off Canisius 67-64
CLEVELAND -- Rob Edwards had three 3-pointers and 17 points on Tuesday night and Bobby Word's tip-in with 18 seconds left helped Cleveland State hold off Canisius 67-64 in the Bluegrass Showcase.
Cleveland State (1-1) took the lead for good at 56-53 on Kasheem Thomas' 3-pointer with 10:05 to play but the Vikings led by no more than four points the rest of the way.
Word had 14 points and Thomas, Jibri Blount and Derek Sloan added 10 points each.
Jermaine Crumpton made a 3 with 1:48 left that pulled Canisius (0-2) to 65-64. The Golden Griffins attempted only two more shots -- Phil Valenti's missed 3-point attempt with 51 seconds and Kassius Robertson's missed 3 in the final seconds.
Canisius had the largest lead of the game at 39-31 on Robertson's 3-pointer to start the second half. Crumpton led the Griffins with 21 points. Robertson added 13 and Valenti scored 10.
