Haymond scores 20, W. Michigan beats NAIA Marygrove 90-74
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Tucker Haymond scored 20 points and had five assists, freshman Brandon Johnson and Drake Lamont each had double-doubles and Western Michigan beat NAIA Marygrove College 90-74 on Friday night.
Lamont finished with 14 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, and a career-high 11 rebounds while Johnson scored 12 with 14 boards. Thomas Wilder added 12 points for Western Michigan (1-0).
Haymond opened the scoring with a pair of free throws nearly 2 minutes in and the Broncos never trailed despite shooting 39 percent from the field -- including 4 of 27 from 3-point range -- and 57 percent (24 of 42) from the free-throw line.
Western Michigan outrebounded Marygrove 62-40, including 27-6 on the offensive glass, and outscored the Mustangs 19-5 on second-chance points.
Isaac Gillum and Eli Ingram scored 14 apiece to lead Marygrove (0-1). T.K. Dixson added 13 points on 2-of-11 shooting.
