Morning hoops: Winthrop defeats Manhattan 94-81


NEW YORK -- Joshua Davenport and Keon Johnson scored 22 points each Tuesday morning to lead Winthrop to a 94-81 victory over a Manhattan team that shot just 28 percent.

The game started at 8:45 a.m., part of ESPN's daylong college basketball marathon.

Davenport went 16 of 18 from the foul line and Johnson 11 of 12 in a game marked by 68 fouls. Davenport left the game with 3:04 to go after colliding with an opponent who appeared to step on his right foot. Anders Broman added 15 points for Winthrop (2-0), which finished 36 of 42 from the line.

Zavier Turner led Manhattan (0-2) with 16 points and Thomas Capuano added 12.

Winthrop, the favorite in the Big South Conference, led 53-44 at halftime.
