Top-seeded Texas Southern advances in SWAC tournament
HOUSTON -- Malcolm Riley scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and top-seeded Texas Southern swept the season series with No. 8 seed Alabama A&M in a 77-69 victory on Wednesday night in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Texas Southern (18-13) will play in the semifinals on Friday against the winner of Thursday's matchup between No. 4 seed Southern and fifth-seeded Alabama State.
Alabama A&M pulled to 72-68 on a Nicholas West basket with 2:20 left but the Bulldogs would not make another field goal. Riley answered with a 3-pointer and after Alabama A&M went 1 of 2 at the line, David Blanks hit two free throws.
Chris Thomas added 17 points, Jose Rodriguez 16 and Derrick Griffin had 10 points with 11 rebounds for Texas Southern.
Rodriguez and Thomas combined to score 23 of Texas Southern's 35 first-half points as the Tigers led by two.
West had 19 points and 15 rebounds, eight on the offensive end, for Alabama A&M (11-18).
