UC Irvine routs Cal Poly 84-64 in Big West tourney quarters

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Luke Nelson scored a career-high 36 points and UC Irvine routed Cal Poly 84-64 Thursday night in a Big West Conference tournament quarterfinal.
The second-seeded Anteaters (25-8) matched a school record with 25 wins and moves on to Friday's semifinal.
Nelson made six 3-pointers, was 11 of 15 from the field and made all eight of his free-throw attempts. Alex Young added 10 for UC Irvine, which has won 15 of its last 18 games.
Luke Meikle had 19 points and Brian Bennett 10 for the Mustangs, (10-19), who shot 38 percent from the field and made just 9 of 20 free throws.
UC Irvine led 38-36 at halftime. Nelson made a 3 to open the second half, sparking a 13-5 surge and the Anteaters had a double digit lead the rest of the way.
