SE Louisiana hits 12 3s; tops Privateers in Southland opener
KATY, Texas -- Zay Jackson scored 17 points and made a career-high five 3-pointers to help No. 5 seed Southeastern Louisiana beat eighth-seeded New Orleans 84-74 on Wednesday in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament.
Southeastern Louisiana (12-20) will play No. 4 seed Houston Baptist (16-15) on Thursday.
Joshua Filmore added 13 points, Marlain Veal 11 and the duo each made three of SE Louisiana's 12 3-pointers. The Lions entered the game making 36.3 percent from distance, but were 12 of 25 (48 percent) Wednesday.
It was the third meeting between the two schools in the last 15 days -- with SE Louisiana winning all three. The Lions have won nine of their last 12 overall.
Nate Frye scored a season-high 21 points and Christavious Gill added 18 for New Orleans (10-20), which was playing in its second all-time Southland tournament. Eleven of New Orleans' 24 field goals were from 3-point range.
