Gardner-Webb beats Big South tourney host Campbell 79-69
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Harold McBride and Adonis Burbage scored 18 points each and sixth-seeded Gardner-Webb beat tournament host, 11th-seeded Campbell, 79-69 on Thursday in the first round of the Big South tournament.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (16-15), who shot 53 percent, play No. 3 seed and two-time defending champion Coastal Carolina on Friday. Tyrell Nelson added 10 points.
DJ Mason scored 19 points, Troy Harper 13, Chris Clemons 12 and Shane Whitefield 10 for the Camels (12-18), who split the season series with the Bulldogs, winning at home.
Gardner-Webb never trailed and led by 16 with five minutes left in the first half. The Camels got six straight points from Mason, and Rod Days followed with a bucket to tie the game at 53-all with seven minutes left. The Bulldogs responded with an 11-3 run, with six points from McBride, and remained ahead, making eight free throws in the final minute.
