NAIA Wiley upsets Sam Houston St., 67-66 on a late layup
HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Kevondric Davis scored nine of his 26 points in the final two and a half minutes and Patrick Banks got to the rim for a layup with two seconds left in the game to earn NAIA Wiley College an upset win over Sam Houston State, 67-66 Sunday night.
Down by eight with 2:30 left, Davis converted a four-point play, knocked down another 3-pointer and tipped in a rebound to give the Wildcats a 65-64 lead. Albert Almanza hit a pair of free throws with :09 left to put Sam Houston (2-4) back in front before Banks scored the game winner.
Davis connected on 9 of 13 from the field and knocked down 7 of his 8 3-point attempts for the NAIA school from Marshall, Texas. The Wildcats were 22 of 49 from the field (44.9 percent) and 8 of 13 from long range.
Almanza led the Bearkats with 15 points.
