Alonso scores 21 and UNC-Greensboro beats Samford 82-77, OT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Francis Alonso scored 21 points, including a 3-pointer to open overtime as North Carolina-Greensboro pulled away in the extra period to defeat Samford 82-77 Thursday night.
Diante Baldwin added 18 points with seven rebounds and Kayel Locke -- who forced overtime with a pair of free throws in the last five seconds of regulation -- scored 14 points and also grabbed seven boards for the Spartans (11-17, 7-8 Southern Conference).
The game was a back-and-forth battle with 12 lead changes and 11 ties. Each team led by as many as eight points.
Samford clawed back from four points down late in regulation when Darius Jones-Gibson scored five unanswered points before Locke's free throws.
Wyatt Walker scored 17 points to lead Samford (12-17, 3-13) and five Bulldogs reached double figures. Jones-Gibson scored 14, Christen Cunningham 12 with six assists, Marcus Johnson 11 points and Iman Johnson added 10 with seven rebounds.
