Eastern Kentucky bets South Carolina State 92-82
RICHMOND, Ky. -- Nick Mayo scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, JaVontae Hawkins added 19 points, and Eastern Kentucky beat South Carolina State 92-82 on Saturday at the EKUHoops Classic.
The tournament features the Colonels and Bulldogs, along with Ball State and the Longwood Lancers. The Colonels beat Ball State 89-81 Friday and face Longwood on Sunday.
Jarelle Reischel scored 18 for the Colonels (3-1), who made 11 of 20 shots from beyond the arc (55 percent).
The Bulldogs (2-2) pulled within 46-45 after Greg Mortimer's layup, but Eastern Kentucky pulled away and led 66-55 after Paul Jackson's layup with 8:55 left and held on. Hawkins hit 3-of-4 3-pointers and sealed the win with a dunk.
Mayo and JaVontae Hawkins each scored 12 and the Colonels led 43-36 at halftime.
Ed Stephens scored 21 points and shot 5 of 11 from distance for the Bulldogs. Gabe McCray added 18 points, Eric Eaves, 16, and Mortimer, 10.
