Chievous leads Hampton over Delaware State 82-72
DOVER, Del. -- Quinton Chievous had 21 points and 19 rebounds, Reginald Johnson Jr. added 16 points and Hampton led the entire way Monday night to beat Delaware State 82-72.
Chievous had 19 points in the second half and his jumper with 1:16 left made it 75-67 for the Pirates (16-9, 11-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Hampton led by no less than six from there and maintained its half-game lead over South Carolina State for first place in the conference standings.
Brian Darden added 11 points and Dionte Adams scored 10 for the Pirates. Hampton had its largest lead at 45-25 with 15:54 left in the game.
Delaware State rallied with a 21-7 run to pull within 64-59 on Kavon Waller's 3-pointer with 5:44 left.
Freshman Devin Morgan Jr. was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and led the Hornets (7-21, 5-8) with a season-best 31 points. Joseph Lewis scored 12.
