ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Ed Stephens scored 23 points as South Carolina State beat Coppin State 88-83 on Saturday.
Stephens was 8 of 11 from the field including six 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (13-11, 8-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Gabriel McCray added 19 points and nine rebounds and Eric Eaves had 18 points and Tashombe Riley 10. The team hit 59 percent from the field overall and 64.5 percent from the foul line.
The Bulldogs took a 22-19 lead midway through the first half on their way to a 39-37 edge at the break. South Carolina State took a 75-69 lead with three minutes left in the second half and held on for the win.
Christian Kessee scored 27 points for the Eagles (5-17, 3-6) who are on a three-game skid. Trevon Seymore added 14 points and nine rebounds.
