Stetson blows out Fort Valley State, 101-72
DELAND, Fla. -- Derick Newton scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help lead Stetson to a 101-72 victory over Division II Fort Valley State on Monday night.
The win was the first of the season for the Hatters (1-3), snapping a three game losing streak. It was also the first time in 103 games in which they topped the 100 pint plateau.
Luke Doyle added 13 points and seven assists and Brian Pegg finished with 12 points and 13 boards, including six on the offensive end.
The Hatters shot 48.6% from the field and never trailed, opening the game on a 14-0 run bookended by layups by Pegg and Leo Goodman.
Stetson led 49-34 at the half and pushed its lead to a game-high 33 (96-63) with 3:53 left as part of a 27-11 scoring stretch capped by a Newton three.
Marcelis Hansberry scored 16 for the Wildcats.
