UMBC beats Longwood 70-59
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Rodney Elliott scored 18 points, Cody Joyce added 16 on 7-of-12 shooting, and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County beat Longwood 70-59 on Saturday.
Joe Sherburne scored 15 points with three 3-pointers, Will Darley added 14 with four 3s, and UMBC (2-7) shot 52 percent from the field and made 10 of 21 3-pointers.
Up by seven at halftime, Sherburne scored nine straight points amid a 12-2 run and the Retrievers pulled ahead 54-40. Longwood closed on an 8-2 run, but UMBC pulled away 62-48 with 2:40 left after Joyce and Elliot combined for six points, and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Kanayo Obi-Rapu hit three straight 3-pointers and two layups and Longwood jumped ahead 22-7 and looked to run away with it, but UMBC scored 19 unanswered points and led 37-30 at halftime on Darley's 3-pointer.
Kanayo Obi-Rapu scored 18 points with four 3-pointers for Longwood (3-6) and Lotanna Nwogbo added 11.
