Liberty beats Covenant 64-62
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Evan Maxwell scored 15 points with 10 rebounds to lead Liberty to a 64-62 win over Covenant in a season opener on Friday night.
Maxwell was 6 of 9 from the field for the Flames. Ryan Kemrite had 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. A.C. Reid added nine points and four rebounds. The team hit 40.7 percent from the field and 58.8 percent from the line.
Liberty trailed through much of the first half but was able to pull to within a point on a Kemrite 3-pointer and an Anthony Fields layup at the buzzer to trail 27-26 at the break.
A Reid 3-pointer early in the second half put the Flames on top 38-35 and another by Reid with an assist by Maxwell with 3:45 to play gave Liberty a 60-55 lead and they held on for the win.
Berto Dryden led the Fighting Scots with 14 points.
