Idaho beats North Dakota 74-71 in Big Sky opener
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Perrion Callandret scored 21, Chad Sherwood added 16 and Ty Egbert 11 on Thursday night as Idaho escaped with a 74-71 win over North Dakota in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
Chris Sarbaugh gave the Vandals (9-5) the lead for good at 69-67 and Callandret followed with a pair of free throws and a four-point lead with 1:09 left.
North Dakota(5-7) twice pulled within two on free throws. Idaho's Arkadiy Mkrtychyan made of 1 of 2 foul shots with 18 seconds left and Quinton Hooker missed on a 3-point attempt in the final seconds for North Dakota.
Idaho led most of the way until the Fighting Hawks took the lead in the middle of the second half with 11 straight points to get to 52-49. Hooker scored eight of his 28 points during that stretch.
Geno Crandall added 13 points and Carson Shanks scored 10.
