Pegg scores 19 as Stetson upends Florida Gulf Coast 80-73
DELAND, Fla. -- Brian Pegg scored 19 points, freshman Derick Newton added 17 and Luke Doyle scored 18 with six 3-pointers as Stetson upset Florida Gulf Coast 80-73 on Thursday night, breaking a six-game losing streak and finding a place in next week's Atlantic Sun tournament.
Stetson overcame a 15-point first-half deficit, making 11 of 20 3-pointers. The Hatters took the lead for good at 54-53 with 12:35 left in the game when Pegg scored. Florida Gulf Coast came within 71-68 with 1:33 left on a Christian Terrell layup. But Newton hit a 3 for the Hatters.
Stetson (10-21, 4-10 Atlantic Sun), banned from the NCAA Tournament for missing the academic performance standards by one point, will be the 7th seed, meeting No. 2 NJIT on the road.
The Eagles (17-13, 8-6) were led by Marc Eddy Norelia with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Fourth-seeded Georgia Southern will host no. 5 Kennesaw State.
