Tulsa holds off Houston, 59-51, advances to AAC semifinal
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Shaquille Harrison scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds as second-seeded Tulsa held off No. 10 seed Houston 59-51 on Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.
The Golden Hurricane (22-9) will face the winner of the semifinal between No. 6 Connecticut and No. 3 Cincinnati Saturday.
Houston stayed within striking distance down the stretch, scoring its final 15 points from beyond the arc, but could not bridge the gap and was held scoreless over the final 3:11. The Cougars finished 7 of 27 from distance and managed just 35.1 percent from the field (20 of 57).
D'Andre Wright's layup with 10:10 to play in the game gave Tulsa the lead for good. Harrison dunked and scored on a layup to complete the 7-0 run that put Tulsa in charge.
LeRon Barnes hit back-to-back 3s for Houston to cut the lead to 54-51 with 3:11 left, but got no closer.
Devonta Pollard scored 14 points to lead Houston (13-19).
