Texas Southern has early lead, holds off Grambling St 60-51
HOUSTON -- Madarious Gibbs and Chris Thomas had 13 points apiece as Texas Southern held off Grambling State 60-51 on Saturday night, improving to 4-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Tonnie Collier added 11 points for Texas Southern (7-10, 4-0).
TSU broke out to an early lead and held a 34-17 halftime advantage. The Tigers were up 58-39 with 5:46 remaining after Collier hit a 3-point jumper. Richard Freeman made a jump shot and A'Torrie Shine nailed a 3-pointer as Grambling scored 10 unanswered points to close to 59-49 with 1:51 left. TSU scored two points in the final 5:24 but it was enough for the win.
Grambling was 18 of 39 (46.2 percent) from the floor. TSU was 18 of 51 (35.3 percent).
Shine had 18 and Richard Freeman added 12 for Grambling (2-13, 0-5).
