Savannah State holds off Bethune-Cookman 58-49
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Terel Hall scored 14 points and Savannah State beat Bethune-Cookman 58-49 on Wednesday night.
The Tigers (8-19, 4-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored 26 points off 18 turnovers and also had the advantage in the paint, outscoring the Wildcats 32-20. Savannah State shot only 40.8 percent but that was better than Bethune-Cookman's 34.1.
Ricky Johnson led Bethune-Cookman (10-18, 6-7) with 19 points and Brandon Stewart with 10. Travis Elliott grabbed 11 rebounds.
Leading 26-23 at halftime, Savannah State gave up a basket to Johnson before scoring the next nine points to go up by double figures. The Wildcats were within seven with 14:29 left before Savannah State scored 10 unanswered points over the next 1:22 for its biggest lead, 17 points, at 49-32. The closest the Wildcats got after that was five points, 52-47, with 2:43 remaining but the Tigers used six free throws from there to seal the win.
