Cooper hits late 3; UTEP beats Texas-San Antonio 69-62
EL PASO, Texas -- C.J. Cooper nailed a 3-point jumper and then made two straight free throws to secure a 69-62 UTEP victory over Texas-San Antonio on Saturday night.
UTEP (19-7, 11-3 Conference USA) led throughout most of the second half but could never run away from the Roadrunners. The Miners were ahead 64-55 with 1:58 left. Jeromie Hill hit two treys and Keon Lewis made a free throw as UTSA closed to 66-62 with 22 seconds left. Julian Washburn, who finished with 10 points, closed it out with three free throws.
The victory was the 100th victory at UTEP for coach Tim Floyd.
Earvin Morris led UTEP with 18 points, Cooper made 4 of 8 from long range to total 16 and Vince Hunter added 10.
UTEP trails only Louisiana Tech (12-3) in the conference standings. The Bulldogs lost to Old Dominion 72-53 on Saturday.
Hill and Ryan Bowie led UTSA (13-12, 7-7) with 14 points apiece.
