Rhode Island blitzes Delaware State 83-44
KINGSTON, R.I. -- E.C. Matthews scored 14 points, Gilvydas Biruta added 13 and Rhode Island had no problem with Delaware State on Saturday, winning 83-44 in the first-ever meeting.
The Rams (6-3) used a 20-4 run over 12 minutes in the first half, highlighted by two Biruta dunks, to build a 15-point lead and were ahead 31-18 at the half. In the second half Rhode Island shot a blistering 71 percent and continually pulled away.
Kendal Williams had 10 points for the Hornets (4-6), who shot 25 percent. Delaware was 16 of 63 from the field while Rhode Island had 20 baskets in just the second half.
The Rams ended up shooting 59 percent shooting but managed just 55 percent from the foul line (18-33). Jarvis Garrett had 10 points and six assists off the bench. Hassan Martin grabbed seven rebounds.
