Kent State edges Akron 79-77
KENT, Ohio -- Kris Brewer sank a driving layup just ahead of the buzzer to lift Kent State to a 79-77 win over Akron on Friday night that gave the Golden Flashes a share of the Mid-American Conference title.
Kent State is the tournament third seed and has a two-round bye into the third round of the tournament.
Kent State (21-10, 12-6) led by eight late in the second half but Akron closed in, tying the game at 77 with Antino Jackson's layup with five seconds left. Brewer, who finished with 20 points, quickly took the ball down the right side of the court, crossed to the center just above the key and then drove the left lane, dropping it in for the winning score just before time expired.
Derek Jackson led the Golden Flashes with 22 points, Jimmy Hall added 18 and Devareaux Manley had 10.
Reggie McAdams sank five 3-pointers and had 17 points for Akron (18-13, 9-9) and Jackson finished with 16.
