Sherman-Newsome carries Colgate by Campbell 54-48
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Damon Sherman-Newsome scored eight points in the final 70 seconds for a career-high 29 points to lead Colgate to a 54-48 win over Campbell on Saturday.
D.J. Mason started and ended a 7-0 run that put the Camels (1-2) up 46-45 with 1:21 to play. Sherman-Newsome responded with a three-point play 10 seconds later, then made four-straight free throws to put the Raiders (1-2) in front 52-46 with 26 seconds left.
Austin Tillotson added 10 points for Colgate and Luke Roh had 10 rebounds.
Kyre' Hamer led Campbell with 12 points and 10 rebounds and D.J. Mason had 11 points.
The Camels had their chances but were a dismal 8 of 22 from the free throw line, to go along with 36 percent shooting from the field (18-5). Campbell had a 25-18 lead but went scoreless the last 5 minutes of the first half, holding on for a 25-24 lead.
