ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Jordan Washington scored 19 points and delivered 10-of-11 free throws in helping Mississippi Valley State get past Tougaloo College 89-81 on Saturday night.
James Currington chipped in 16 points shooting 7 for 9, while Daniel Hurtt hit double figures with 11.
Mississippi Valley State (3-6) led at halftime 43-31, but NAIA member Tougaloo toughened-up, shooting 71 percent and outscoring MVSU 50-46 in the second half. Still, it was not enough as MVSU shot over 66 percent themselves in the period.
For the game, both teams hit over 57 percent from the field, but the difference in the score was punctuated by MVSU landing 22-of-32 free throws compared to 16 by the Bulldogs. MVSU also bested the Bulldogs in 3-pointers by two baskets.
Cordaryl Campbell knocked down 11 of 15 baskets from the field, scoring 27 points for Tougaloo. Trever Thomas had 16.
