Appalachian State puts down Samford 63-57
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tommy Spagnolo scored 21 points and nabbed 10 rebounds and Appalachian State rallied late in the second half to knock off Samford 63-57 on Thursday night.
Appalachian State (9-19, 5-10 Southern Conference) led 33-30 at intermission even though Samford (11-19, 5-10) shot nearly 60 percent from the floor. The Mountaineers were able to maintain the first period lead by out-rebounding the Bulldogs on the offensive boards 8-1 and committing 10 fewer turnovers in the half.
It took Appalachian State over 4 minutes to get its first points in the second half, allowing Samford to pull away by as many as eight before the Mountaineers regrouped and tied the score at 54 on an Aaron Scott 3-point play with 1:54 remaining.
Samford folded going into the buzzer and was outscored 9-3 following Scott's game tying basket and free throw.
Tim Williams led Samford with 20 points and nine rebounds.
