The Citadel ends 17-game slide, tops Samford 81-71
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Ashton Moore scored 24 points and Matt Van Scyoc added 19 to help The Citadel earn their first Southern League win, dropping Samford 81-71 on Monday night.
The Citadel (5-25, 1-14) shot 53.1 percent from the field and went 9 of 20 from beyond the arc. Marshall Harris III finished with 13 points.
Samford (11-18, 5-9) was led by Isaiah Williams with 24 points and Tim Williams chipped in 20 with nine rebounds.
The Citadel trailed 11-8 early in the first half, but stormed ahead with an 18-4 run sparked by two 3-pointers and a jumper by Moore. Raemond Robinson hit a pair from the perimeter and Van Scyoc made four late free throws to grab a 38-24 halftime advantage.
Samford cut the deficit to as little as five in the second half, but could not pull any closer.
With the win, the Citadel broke a 17-game losing streak.
