Dartmouth Big Green @ St. John's Red Storm
St. John's snaps skid, defeats Dartmouth 69-55
NEW YORK -- Phil Greene IV scored 16 points, including a career-best four 3-pointers, to lead St. John's to a 69-55 win over Dartmouth on Saturday night.
JaKarr Sampson added 13 for the Red Storm, who snapped a five-game losing streak with the win.
The final regular season non-conference game for both squads was a close contest throughout the first half. St. John's took a 38-34 lead to the locker room, and never led by more than seven in the opening period. But they opened the second half with seven straight points and didn't look back from there.
Greene made three of his four 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the contest, carrying the Red Storm through a somewhat sluggish start. Only two days removed from a double-overtime loss to Providence, the Red Storm had trouble finding their legs.
But after Dartmouth took a brief lead, St. John's quickly recovered and proved dominant in the second half.
John Golden led the way for Dartmouth with 13 points. Connor Boehm scored 7 and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Greene opened the second half with a 3-pointer that began a 7-0 run for St. John's. Dartmouth held firm for a while, but an 11-2 run later in the period put it on ice for St. John's.
Dartmouth coach Paul Cormier went to his bench early and often, as 14 players saw action for the Big Green. Their chances took a hit when Golden, their leading scorer on the night, drew his third foul with 59.7 seconds remaining in the first half.
A 3-pointer at the first half buzzer by Alex Mitola gave the Big Green some hope, but they were unable to take advantage.
The win was St. John's second straight over an Ivy League foe, as they defeated Columbia on Dec. 28.
