LSU gets 88-74 win over Northwestern St.
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Both Johnny O'Bryant and Andre Stringer scored 21 points as LSU defeated Northwestern State 88-74 in a non-conference basketball game Saturday.
O'Bryant, who was 9 of 15 from the field, grabbed 14 rebounds to have his second double-double in as many games. Stringer, who made four 3-pointers, became the 39th player in Tigers history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in his career. Stringer, a senior, now has 1,006 career points.
Anthony Hickey came off the bench to score 11 points for LSU (1-1). Freshman Jordan Mickey had his second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Brison White was the top scorer for the Demons (2-1) with 17 points. DeQuan Hicks added 16 points and 11 rebounds.
LSU had the lead for almost the entire first half. The Tigers went on a 10-1 run during a three-minute stretch early in the opening half to go on top 17-8. A 3-point play by O'Bryant started the LSU spurt. Hickey had a 3-pointer while Stringer and Mickey also baskets.
Northwestern State came no closer than six points during the rest of the half. A 3-point play by Hicks left the Demons behind 34-28 with 3:01 remaining before halftime. Sparked by Darcy Malone's five points, the Tigers went into intermission with a 40-31 lead.
Northwestern State switched to a zone defense at the outset of the second half and slowed down LSU. The Tigers built a 50-38 lead before Northwestern State went on a 10-2 run. Two field goals by Zeek Woodley put the Demons behind 52-48 with 12:16 left in the game.
LSU was able to extend its lead again to double digits at 60-50 as Stringer made a 3-pointer, John Odo sank a basket and Mickey made one of two foul shots. The Tigers followed with an 11-0 run to take a 76-57 lead with 6:53 to go. Stringer had two baskets in that stretch.
