Hawkins, UC Davis outlast Cal Poly 62-58
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Corey Hawkins scored 16 points with six assists and Ryan Sypkens added 14 points as UC Davis outlasted Cal Poly 62-58 Thursday night.
The Aggies (7-14, 2-4 Big West) shot 48.9 percent from the field and hit 10 of 22 3-pointers. Avery Johnson finished with 11 points and Georgi Funtarov had 10.
Cal Poly (8-12, 4-3) shot 49 percent, but went 3 of 10 beyond the arc. Chris Eversley scored 17 points and Dave Nwaba contributed 14.
UC Davis trailed by seven at the break, but pushed to a 48-46 lead at the 7:39 mark. Sypkens hit two 3-pointers and Hawkins hit another to grab a five-point lead with 58 seconds left.
Joel Awich answered with a jumper and a dunk to cut the Mustang's deficit to one. After two Hawkins free throws, Cal Poly missed on two 3-point attempts. Iggy Nujic hit a free throw for the final margin.
